Manjushree

He is the oldest of the Bodhisattvas. He is regarded as the creator of the Kathmandu valley. According to the legend, he was a Chinese saint. Divine intuition told him of the flame of fire on a lotus in Kalihrada, a big lake in Nepal where he came with his two wives (Kesini and Upakesini), King Dharmakara and other disciples for worshipping the flame. To reach the flame in the water of the lake, he cut way with his sword a portion of the hill on the south which was preventing the water from flowing out. The water rushed out through the opening. Land appeared which the Kathmandu valley becomes and the waters of the river Bagmati drained out through the opening. Swayambhunath stupa was built on the spot where a blue flame was coming out of the lotus. The Chinese legend says that Manjushri was brought into existence by Gautam Buddha himself. In sculptures he is represented as having one face and two arms. In his right hand he brandishes the sword of wisdom while in left hand he holds a book on a lotus placed on his left side and his left hand is in a jnan mudra i.e. teaching pose. He symbolizes wisdom.

Manjushri is regarded as the God of Agriculture of celestial architect. He is also god of science. Manjushri has many manifestations such as Vagishvara, Manjughos, Manjuvajra, Vajranga, etc.
